Guest Blog: Why Choose BDO?

Posted 4th January 2016 by Roulon du Toit & filed under General,

At CA Campus we believe that it is important that future CAs (SA) are informed when making a decision on where to apply for a training contract or when looking for a future employer.

We asked BDO why trainees should apply for training contracts at them. Read their answer below.

WHY CHOOSE BDO?

The BDO culture is something quite tangible – you’ll feel it the moment you walk through the door and are warmly greeted by one of our receptionists. This applies to all our offices, whether you visit Cape Town, London or New York. Comments such as ‘people greet me when they see me’ and ‘people care about me’ to ‘we have fun at work’ all demonstrate that at BDO we have a culture of working hard, but also of taking time to get to know our colleagues, many of whom become friends.

Many of our partners have come through the ranks, having completed their articles at BDO. You’ll find a supporting working environment, an open door policy, opportunities to become involved in a range of extra activities – from Sports and Social events and community involvement and events that support and promote the BDO Values.

OUR HERITAGE

BDO in South Africa has its roots in Spencer Shaw Hood, a firm which opened its doors in 1916. The BDO network was formed in 1963 and Spencer Steward, as the firm was then known, joined the BDO network in 1980. In 2009, a decision was taken globally to drop the local member firm names and every Member Firm is now known simply as ‘BDO’ in their local market. About 63 000 BDO staff currently service clients in 164 countries.

YOU MATTER

From the Clients we service to the people we hire, relationships matter at BDO.

Why? Because without the support of the people around, no business can truly succeed. Our commitment is to create unlimited growth by giving our people continuous opportunities and our client’s unparalleled support, because what matters to you, matters to us.

WHY BDO?

As a world-class Audit, Tax and Advisory firm, our objective is to provide an environment where talented people can develop their careers and contribute to building the BDO business, that of our clients and the economy as a whole. We  empower our people to make their own decisions and provide them with the best in training,  experience, opportunity and rewards.

Testimony to this is our 2015 ITC Results with a 100% pass rate in Johannesburg and Durban and a 75% pass rate nationally, while the ITC national average was 50%. Our APC 2015 results were also above the national average with a 76% pass rate.

But we don’t stop there, to be truly competitive and grow, we need to keep learning. That’s why our Learning and Development department gives ongoing training to trainees and our people are encouraged to attend short courses, to continually develop their skills and expertise. Courses include the likes of: • SAICA Assessment Training • Audit Planning and Finalisation • SAICA residual competencies • Leadership training – soft and technical skills

OTHER REASONS TO JOIN BDO:

  • Exposure to a range of clients across all industry sectors, and all sizes
  • Opportunities to make a difference to local communities through our CSI projects
